Go electricGoals: energy independence and carbon neutralityThe high energy density of petroleum fuels makes it a perfect choice as an energy source for transportation. Alternative solutions are scarce and all have drawbacks: biofuels, gas, hydrogen. The use of electricity allows us to reach two main goals: stopping our dependence on fossil fuels and stopping carbon emissions - provided that electricity is generated in a clean way.
Electric vehicles are efficientElectric motors boast high efficiency coefficients, over 90%. Their torque at standstill is high. They are reliable, require little maintenance and have a long life-cycle. Battery technology has greatly improved over the past decade. R&D is very active in this field and new batteries are certain to appear in the near future. Costs are decreasing and lithium technologies are improving in terms of temperature, cost and energy density. Today, depending on the battery package, range varies between 100 and 300 km (60 to 200 miles). Moreover, hybrids and especially plug-in hybrids are a attractive complement to pure battery electric vehicles.
Electric mile at the same price as gasoline-powered mileThe “gasoline mile” will become more and more expensive: gas prices are up and carbon taxes will be put in place, adding the cost of the carbon externality to each gasoline-powered mile. On the other hand, the “electric mile” is becoming cheaper, thanks in particular to productivity gains in the battery industry.
Towards a vehicle-to-grid infrastructureTomorrow, smart grid, dynamic pricing and vehicle-to-grid infrastructure will help optimise the cost to charge batteries, by taking into account grid load requirements in real time. Putting EVs on the road requires the successful integration of the charging infrastructure into the electrical grid. This is key to the success of mass-market electric mobility. |
